China's ByteDance
China's ByteDance
TikTok is only a fraction of ByteDance’s massive business portfolio, accounting for roughly 15% to 20% of its total global revenue. The remaining 80% to 85% of ByteDance’s revenue comes from "other things".
ByteDance generated $186 billion in total revenue, making it the largest social media conglomerate in the world by revenue, even surpassing Meta.
What ByteDance Owns Besides TikTok
1. Core Chinese Platforms (The Primary Revenue Engines)
- Douyin: Chinese version of TikTok. Far more advanced in social commerce. Users can buy groceries, book hotel rooms, and order food delivery directly inside the app.
- Toutiao: A highly popular AI-driven news and content aggregation platform in China.
- Xigua Video & Huoshan: Complementary video streaming platforms in China focusing on mid-form content and live streaming.
2. Global AI and Productivity Software
- CapCut: The world's most popular free mobile video editing app. Integrates with TikTok and monetizes thru premium templates and cloud storage subscriptions.
- Doubao: ByteDance's primary AI chatbot in China.
- Lark (Feishu): An enterprise collab and productivity suite (like Slack or MS Teams).
- Lemon8: A lifestyle, photo, and blog-sharing app designed to compete with Pinterest and Instagram in Western and Southeast Asian markets.
3. Enterprise AI & Hardware
- Volcengine: Sells ByteDance's AI recommendation algorithms and LLMs to 3rd-party businesses.
- PICO: Virtual reality (VR) hardware company to compete against Meta’s Quest headsets.
